The Knott

Bowness on Windermere

This new dwelling in the Lake District occupies 0.25 ha of the ‘knott’ or mound adjacent Lake Windermere, with jetty access to the lake at the southern end of the plot. Arts and Crafts is well represented in this part of Cumbria and in response, the new dwelling is a mix of contemporary and Arts and Crafts detailing, with generous glazing and balconies to the south. A double height stair and entrance hall prepares visitors for the stunning first floor living space opening to balcony areas with lakeside access and views.

Externally, selections have been made from a limited palette of materials used locally: wet dash render; natural slate walling and chimneys; and Westmorland blue slate roof tiles, with natural stone window dressings.
