THIRLMERE

Wrea Green

Abito Architects were appointed in 2015 by private clients who had purchased a large Edwardian house within 4.6 acres of mature gardens and grounds. The property, identified as a heritage asset, required renovation to restore original features; to provide improved family accommodation and to create better links between the house and the extensive gardens.

The south entrance was restored as a formal drive and vehicular approach. Alterations to the east allowed large open plan living spaces and kitchen to open onto new hard landscaping and ornamental pond. Alterations to the north provided a new double garage and utility areas. On upper floors extended areas provide for a large master suite and roof terrace, with improved bedroom and family bathroom areas.

Proportions of the building’s original bays and roof gradients informed the planning of the new accommodation and material palette was drawn from the original property’s Accrington brickwork, ornamental fishtail tile hanging and clay plain roof tiles.
